Western scholars long believed that Russians destroyed the bulk of Jacobsen's collection during World War II. In fact, artifacts were packed and hidden in anti-aircraft towers during the bombing of Berlin. When the military reclaimed the towers, soldiers moved most of the crates to potassium mines in eastern Germany.
